BCAD Judicial Appeals Filed by Property Type

Lawsuits have always been the domain of business properties, and 2024 bore that out. Of the 1624 suits filed in Bexar County, 1035 of them were for commercial real estate. In most of Texas, including Bexar County, commercial properties are worth the most on average, many into the billions of dollars. It is no surprise that 63.73% of all post-administrative cases were in the commercial sector.

Plenty of other property types had their day in court and were successful as well. 445 multi family homes, 104 industrial properties, and 40 single family residences all contributed to the total. Single family homes typically only make 10-20 appearances per year in district court, leaving 2024 as the record holder. Multi family homes are fast risers and are quickly making their way up the chart in both appeals and value.

BCAD Value Involved in Judicial Appeals

The reputation of judicial appeals being for top-dollar properties was certainly upheld in 2024, as lawsuits disputed $33.70 billion in value. Commercial real estate and multi family homes were basically in a dead heat for first place, with $15.89 billion for the former and $16.41 billion for the latter. The single family houses argued in court were set at $156 million. 2024 saw the second-most value in Bexar’s history disputed with lawsuits, with 2023 being the No. 1 year.
