Bexar County homeowners are often unaware of the factors that cause them to pay extra taxes. Appraisal districts are flexible on market value appeals given the large number of houses they value and that are protested. Property owners can appeal both market value and unequal appraisal. It is difficult to persuade property owners to protest their property taxes.  But 60 to 80% of those who do are successful. 

Some homeowners do not appeal property taxes because they are not aware of this right.  You can and should protest both market value and unequal appraisal annually. One reason it is difficult for appraisal districts to correctly value homes is they are not homogenous.  Some have been remodeled and some haven’t. Appraisal districts are willing to settle property tax appeals because they realize their values are not precise. Protest your property taxes on market value and unequal appraisal by May 15th annually. Protest even if you do not receive a value notice.
